'X-RAY POWDER DIFFRACTION IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY'

Monday 18th March 1996

This meeting is being organised at the Glaxo Wellcome Medicines Research Centre, Stevenage by Dr.R.W.Lancaster, who was surprised to find that there was virtually no subject matter of direct interest to the pharmaceutical industry at the Fourth European Powder Diffraction Conference (EPDIC IV) held in Chester in July, and who is looking for colleagues who may be interested in forming a group to hold regular m eetings.

Items for discussion are:

  • Define areas of common interest, e.g. running conditions
  • Adopt a unified approach to dealing with instrument manufacturers
  • Propose software modifications where there is a specific application to our industry
  • Discuss the relative merits and accessibility of indexing software
  • Consider calibration and regulatory issues
  • Decide if there is a need and a future for such a group

Instrument manufacturers and 'Molecular Simulations' are also being invited to participate in discussions in the field of Pharmaceutical XRD.

Practical Reflectivity for Industry - One Day Workshop

Date: provisionally September 17th 1996

Aims:
To provide a greater awareness and understanding of the technique for Industrial Users, many of whom have the instrumentation and software for this technique, but little understanding of the inherent limitations and pitfalls.

To discuss and examine the basics and implementation of X-Ray and neutron reflectivity with respect to industrial applications, concentrating upon the use of sealed tube X-Ray generators, but also considering the use of neutrons as a complementary technique.

It is proposed to avoid a formal series of lectures and concentrate on the practicalities of the technique with group participation. However to provide a framework, two introductory lectures are suggested, one on X-Ray the other on neutron reflectivity, and each subsequent session would then be prefaced by a short introduction before being opened to the participants for general discussion.

The basic premise for the meeting is flexibility - if deemed appropriate, groups of special interest (es pecially in terms of instrumentation) could be split off for independent discussion.

Thus the proposed agenda will be:

  • X-Ray Reflectivity - 40mins
  • Neutron reflectivity - 30mins
  • Instrumentation - 2 or 3 short lectures of 10-15mins /open forum
  • Modelling and data reduction - short lecture 20mins / open forum
  • Software availability - short lecture 20mins / open forum
  • Applications
    1. inorganic thin films/s urfaces
    2. organic materials
