• Fellow of the Royal Society 1972
• David Philips and David Blow awarded 1987 Wolf Foundation prize for chemistry
• Presented the 1st Lonsdale lecture on 'Enzyme Engineering' in Belfast on August 27th 1987 at the meeting of the British Association.
• Biological Structures Group prize renamed in his honour 1996
• Author of Outline of Crystallography for Biologists reviewed in Sept 2002
• Honorary membership of BCA 2003
