General Interest and Outreach

This page holds links to topics of general interest, that contain a minor teaching element but should be accesible to all. Very little, if any, prior crystallographic knowledge should be required for any of the activities.

As part of the general aims of the BCA and education we hope to provide here material which will also be relevant to educational projects. We are particularly hoping to continue to develop outreach projects from Universities into schools promoting not only crystallography but science in general.

X-ray Diffraction:- a brief introduction with historical facts and nice applets that allow online demonstrations of wave interference.

DIY Crystallography:- crystallisation experiments and proceedures that can be downloaded as pdf’s for classroom activities. Perfectly suited to outreach projects.

Model kits:- providing an introduction to polyhedral shapes, with kits that can be printed to allow you to make your own 3D models.

Mineral Gallery:- describes over 600 mineral species (and varieties) and more than 5000 specimens.

Periodic Table:- with cool widgets, a great starting place for the elements.
