CCDC Chemical Crystallography Prize for Younger Scientists

I am delighted to inform you that the winner of this year’s CCDC Chemical Crystallography Prize for Younger Scientists is Dr Gareth Lloyd from the University of Cambridge.

The quality of the nominees for the prize was exceptionally high. However, the committee felt that during his career to date, Gareth has made an outstanding contribution to crystallography with some high impact publications. Gareth will give a talk on his research at this year’s BCA Spring Meeting in Warwick, where he will also be presented with his prize.

Best wishes,
Hazel Sparkes.

Challenges in Crystallography

It is with great delight that I invite you to Warwick for the 2012 BCA Spring Meeting to be held from 16th to 19 April. The programme is bursting with interesting sessions, which reflect the challenges which we currently face in crystallography. Details here.

The registration is now open and the early bird deadline is 12th March 2012.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Warwick in April.

Spring Meeting 2012: change of venue

Dear Member

I wanted to let you know that the venue for the 2012 Spring meeting will not be Loughborough University, as unfortunately they are now unable to accommodate us due to having been selected as the Olympic athletes training site.

At such short notice, we are very fortunate that Northern Networking have been able to book us in to Warwick University for the same dates with similar arrangements as for SM2010. I am happy to say that although Warwick is a more expensive venue, Loughborough have said in writing that they will be covering the difference in cost. Therefore there should be no financial implications for the BCA.

SM 2012 will be an excellent opportunity for us to have a ‘dry run’ of the venue before ECM28 in 2013.

With best wishes

Elspeth

Abstract Submissions for the YC

Hello everybody and Happy New Year to you all,

It is that time of year again when the Young Crystallographers are looking for speakers for the YC satellite meeting. For those who have not attended a YC meeting before the meeting is made up of 3 sessions each headed by an experienced researcher followed by a number of 15 minute talks from young crystallographers. The subject of these talks can be anything within the scope of the BCA. We only stipulate that you are a young crystallographer. That is, you are a current student OR have graduated within 5 years.

If you fall into the above category and would like to give a talk at a national meeting in an environment where less experienced researches are made welcome and nasty questions are strongly discouraged then why not submit an abstract by following this link: http://www.crystallography-meetings.org.uk/uploader/cp/upload_form.php The deadline for oral abstracts is the 15th of January so you’d better get your skates on (if you haven’t got them on already given the weather!). If you are thinking of submitting a poster abstract for the BCA then why don’t you submit the same one for a talk at the YC meeting. If you’re attending the BCA spring meeting then the YC satellite is free and includes 1 night’s accommodation which always goes down well with supervisors.

To supervisors: If you have students or postdocs that fulfil the criteria to be a young crystallographer then I would ask you to encourage them to give a talk. It is the young crystallographers that make this meeting a great event and previous speakers have been highly commended on their presentations and research. This is great CV material and a little encouragement can go a long way.

Thanks,

YC Committee

Physical Crystallography Prize 2010 – Call for Nominations

The Physical Crystallography Prize is awarded for the best recently published work by a person in the early stages of their career, working in the field of Physical Crystallography, whose research is expected to make a significant impact in the field. The award is traditionally presented at the BCA Spring Meeting and the winner gives a Prize Lecture at that meeting. The Physical Crystallography Prize currently consists of a cash award plus expenses for attending the Spring Meeting to deliver the Prize Lecture.

Nominations for the prize must be submitted to the Chair of the Physical Crystallography Group, Prof. Dave Keen (david.keen@stfc.ac.uk), by 31st January 2010 and the Prize will be awarded at the 2010 BCA Spring Meeting at Warwick University, 13-15th April 2010.

PANalytical Thesis Prize 2010 – Call for Nominations

The Physical Crystallography Group is pleased to invite entries for the PANalytical Thesis Prize in Physical Crystallography. The prize will be awarded for the best use of techniques or methods of Physical Crystallography in a successfully examined thesis submitted in the period from 1st September 2008 to 31st December 2009. The amount of the prize, which will be sponsored by PANalytical Ltd, will be £500. To be eligible for the prize, candidates must be a member of the Structural Condensed Matter Group of the IoP and/or the British Crystallographic Association (BCA). Non-members may enter the competition but will be required to join the BCA/PCG at the student rate to progress their nomination further (current rate £10 per annum or £35 for 4 years during the PhD degree study). To enter the competition, candidates must submit: (a) a copy of the Thesis on CD-ROM. (b) a personal statement of not more than 500 words explaining why the thesis should be considered for the prize and including a clear description of the role of Physical Crystallography (as defined on the website www.pcg-scmp.org or otherwise) in the research. (c) the names and contact details of two academic referees, one of whom may be the thesis supervisor, who will be able to comment on the thesis research of the candidate. In order for a thesis to be eligible for the award, the Physical Crystallography element must be central to the work of the thesis, which must also demonstrate a context over and above structural work for its own sake. Nominations for the prize must be submitted to the PCG-SCMP Chair, Prof. David Keen (david.keen@stfc.ac.uk), by 31st January 2010 and the Prize will be awarded at the 2010 BCA Spring Meeting at Warwick University, 13-15th April 2010.

On behalf of the PCG-SCMP Committee,

Ivana Evans
