CCDC now accepts structure factors

The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) is pleased to announce that structure factors are now being accepted with CIFs for deposition to the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD).

Colin Groom, Executive Director, commented that “The CCDC supports the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) in highlighting the importance of retaining and validating experimental data.  We strongly recommend that all journals publishing crystal structures should encourage their authors to provide these data in electronic CIF format.”

“The deposition of structure factors to the CSD is extremely welcome and will greatly facilitate the work of reviewers” said Sylvain Bernès, co-editor Acta Crystallographica Section E. “Archived structure factors also promise to be a rich source of data for research related to statistical bias in x-ray structures and in detection of systematic errors in data collections”.

CIFs and structure factors can now be deposited with the CCDC via a web-based deposition form at: http://www.ccdc.cam.ac.uk/services/structure_deposit

Further information on publication standards can be found on the IUCr website: http://www.iucr.org/index.html/leading-article/2011/2011-06-02

CCG Prizes

Jasper Adamson

The Chemical Crystllography Group awarded three poster prizes at the 2011 BCA Spring Meeting. Jasper Adamson (Oxford), won the IUCr poster prize. Elena Marelli (Reading) was awarded the CrystEngComm poster prize and Marc Shmidtmann (Liverpool) was presented with the CCG poster prize.

ECM28 Logo Competition

At the European Crystallographic Meeting in Istanbul last year, the BCA won the bid to host the ECM28 at the University of Warwick in 2013. We need to choose a logo for the Meeting, and in keeping with tradition we are doing this by running an open competition. The winner will receive as their prize a free registration for ECM28.

General Guidelines

  • The competition is open to all Members of the BCA.
  • Each Member can submit more than one entry.
  • Entries must be effective in both colour and greyscale.
  • Entries should have a distinct crystallographic element.
  • Entries should be in a commonly used graphics format.
  • The closing date is 31 January 2011.

Submit your entry to Susanne Coles (neé Huth) by emailing it to S.Huth@soton.ac.uk with “ECM28 Logo Competition” in the Subject line. The winner will be announced
during the BCA Spring Meeting at Keele University (11-14 April 2011).

Some previous ECM logos are shown here and can also be seen at http://www.ecanews.org/meetings.php.

New Honorary Members

It is with great pleasure that I write to let you know of the result of the nominations made for Honorary Membership of the BCA in 2010. We have three new Honorary Life Members:

Bill Clegg, University of Newcastle
David Taylor, Consultant
Venki Ramakrishnan, MRC-LMB, Cambridge.

Congratulations to all three of them!

IUCr Newsletter and World Directory of Crystallographers

If you are a member of the BCA you should be
receiving the IUCr Newsletter every quarter. If you are not, you can
update your details at http://www.iucr.org/news/newsletter/request. The
IUCr does not use the list for any other purpose, nor do they sell the
information. The Editors of the IUCr Newsletter want to reduce the number of copies
that are not reaching subscribers because of outdated or otherwise
incorrect postal addresses.

Also, please consider updating your existing entry or creating a new one
in the World Directory of Crystallographers at http://www.iucr.org/people/wdc

The World Directory of Crystallographers is a service run by the IUCr to facilitate
communication within the crystallographic community, and between
crystallographers and other scientists. Membership of the World
Directory of Crystallographers also entitles you to special offers
listed here: http://www.iucr.org/people/wdc/special-offers.

Lachlan Cranswick: Information needed

First of all, apologies if you have seen this request by another route, but it is important that we contact anyone who might have information.

Lachlan Cranswick, who is well known to many members of the BCA, has been missing since he left work at Chalk River, Ontario, Canada, at 4:30pm on Monday 18 January 2010. If you have had any contact with Lachlan since then, or have any information about his whereabouts, please let the police know. The contact regarding the search is

E-mail:  cskea@police.deepriver.ca
Phone:  +1 613 584 3500 ext 0
Fax:  +1 613 584 1736.

Alternatively, you could contact Ian Swainson (email: Ian.Swainson@nrc.gc.ca).

Standing Orders (Message from the Treasurer)

Dear Member

As I hope you are aware, over the last year or so the BCA has been  in
the process of changing banks to the Charities Aid Foundation Bank  (CAF
Bank). This process is now complete, and the BCA no longer has any bank
accounts with HSBC plc.

The BCA has taken the opportunity to revise the methods by which
Membership fees can be paid; with immediate effect, standing order
payments will no longer be accepted, but direct debits can be set up
instead and payments can also be made by cheque or credit card.

Any existing standing orders to the BCA should not be debited from
the Member’s account. While it is the individual Member’s responsibility
to confirm this with their own bank, your bank should advise you that your
standing order has been cancelled because the BCA’s bank account has been
closed.
As has been pointed out by a  number of Members with whom I have
discussed this, control of payments made  by standing order lies  wholly with
the payer; BCA has no way of  amending payments received by this method -
we cannot even cancel them.

There are three principal consequences from the removal of the  standing
order facility;

(1)  Members who have inadvertently set up multiple payments will no
longer pay more than once a year for their Membership.

(2) The BCA will be able to identify more easily which Members have
paid their dues – several standing orders are only identified by a
somewhat cryptic message, so we have no idea who is making the payment!
It is possible that a good proportion of these unidentified transactions
are being made from people who are not Members any more.

(3) A substantial proportion (~45% last time I checked) of Members
paying by standing order in previous years paid the wrong amount;  most
of these were underpayments because Members had not updated their
standing orders in line with changes in BCA Membership fees.

I hope that the changes that have been implemented will address these
points.

Finally, I’d like to wish all our Members a Happy Christmas and
Prosperous New Year.

CSD hits half-a-million crystal structures

The CSD’s 500,000th structure is the anti-convulsant drug Lamotrigine, published in Acta Crystallographica, C65, o460-o464, 2009, by Balasubramanian Sridhar and Krishnan Ravikumar of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in Hyderabad. The CSD reference code for the structure is EFEMUX01. Lamotrigine (Lamictal®) was discovered by GlaxoSmithKline and approved by the US FDA for the treatment of epilepsy in 1994 and additionally for the treatment of bipolar I disorder in 2003. Lamotrigine is chemically unrelated to other anticonvulsant or mood regulating medications, and is distinguished by its relatively benign side effects. It is frequently effective in patients who have not responded to antidepressants or other mood stabilisers. The CSD contains chemical structure information on several close variants of the compound, all of which, when used together, provide invaluable information to the life sciences community in their quest to optimise the efficacy of such medicines.

Dr Colin Groom, Executive Director of the CCDC says that “the determination of 500,000 crystal structures is a remarkable achievement. However, the scientific community is hungry for the next 500,000 and the knowledge these will undoubtedly bring. As the CSD grows both in size and in the complexity of structures it contains, the database not only helps us to answer our questions about molecular structure and interactions, but tells us what those questions should be”.
